Yellow Cake Mix, Chocolate Frosting Mix

These were the shiny new things on the shiny new product shelf at TJ’s. Requiring a grand total of 3 sticks of butter, I set to work in making a cake and cupcakes.

I was initially fearful that the yellow cake mix would not taste sweet enough, and I was right. Unequivocally, my test subjects reported that the cake tasted squarely like cornbread. Sweet cornbread.

I put too much water in the frosting, but it tasted fine enough. Slathered on the cornbread, er, yellow cake, it made for an interesting contrast. I ate this cake for breakfast for three days. That’s not really relevant to anything, but seems like the sort of thing one would need to confess.

I wasn’t a huge fan of either, but they were moist,  ridiculously buttery, and easy to make. They are good alternatives to the more frou frou Madagascar Vanilla and truffle brownie mixes. I would stick to my artificial Duncan Hines and funfetti frosting, but that’s just my palate.

  1. Agreed. This tastes like cornbread, not yellow cake. Tastes gross with chocolate icing.

  2. I bought this cake mix from TJ because I wanted to make my daughter a nice yellow cake with chocolate frosting for her 3rd birthday party. As I was mixing the batter I tasted the batter. It didn’t taste right. It tasted like an old Betty Crocker pancake mix with a hint of cornmeal. I was hoping it would taste like a yellow cake when it was out of the oven. When the cake came out of the oven I waited 20 minutes and tasted it. It tasted like somewhat like a corn muffin….definitely not at all like a yellow cake.

The next morning after church I went and bought the regular yellow cake mix I usually bake. I love TJ, but I seriously do NOT recommend the yellow cake.

  3. I just tried it for the first time and YES – it was totally cornbread. I thought it was just me and my husband tried one and said, “I thought you were making cupcakes?” UGHHHH!

  4. I agree with you about the corn-y bread taste of the yellow cake mix. I was really disappointed, because I wanted to love it and I just could not. The frosting is amazing though. I am going to give the chocolate cake mix a try.
